How to Use Messenger Without Facebook on Pc
Are you wondering if it is possible to use Facebook Messenger without having a Facebook account? In short, the answer is yes and there is a convenient process to achieve this.
Hello, I'm Frankie Caruso and I want to personally welcome you to my blog. If you are new to the site, you should know that I am an expert and instant messaging apps like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp, and keen on the latest hacking techniques.
The guide that I put together today is meant to explain how to use Facebook Messenger without actually having a Facebook account.
First things first: since December 26th, 2019, Facebook has removed the possibility of creating a Messenger account without an active Facebook profile. Before this date, you could create an account on Messenger using just your mobile phone number or an email address.
In short, using Messenger today means using an active Facebook account or one that you have used in the past. Fortunately, I have discovered a trick that works around this problem.
I will discuss this in detail a little later, but first let me tell you what I think about it.
Despite Facebook being the most used social network in the world, there are still a lot of people who don't want to take the time to register for their own profile. Likewise, you cannot renounce Messenger, as you can use it to reserve rides with Uber, make video calls, and speak with your family and friends immediately.
I don't agree with the requirement to have a Facebook profile before you can get Messenger. So, I put myself to work on finding effective ways to resolve this problem.
Let me first explain how to keep using Messenger without a Facebook account on iPhone and Android, then I will discuss PC's and Macs.
Ready to begin?
Let's talk about how to install Messenger without a Facebook account.
How to Use Messenger Without a Facebook Account
To accomplish this, you need to have the latest version of Messenger installed. If you experience difficulties installing Messenger, I suggest that you check out this guide about installing Facebook Messenger in a few, short steps.
So let's get into the details about this tutorial.
As I've mentioned a few lines above, in late 2019 it was determined that you must have (or have had) A Facebook account to use Messenger.
However, there is a trick that allows you to create and use a profile on Messenger without keeping the Facebook account.
I like to think of this trick as a sneaky approach, and thus I've named it the "Trojan Horse". I like all the myths of ancient Greece.
The premise is creating a temporary Facebook profile – just enough time to activate Messenger – and then deactivating it. By doing this you get the full wealth of functionality of Messenger to keep in touch with your contacts without maintaining a Facebook profile.
There are some specific steps that you need to follow in this regard. Fortunately, they are the same for both iPhones and Androids.
- Download and install the Messenger app on your device (here the link to AppStore for iPhone and Google Play for Android)
- Now, there are two options: If you have had a Facebook account in the past, you can enter these credentials for access to log in. If you are new, click on the "Create New Account" option. The page opens a Facebook registration. Enter your name, date of birth, phone number, gender and password.
- Once completed, you are able to log in and use Messenger.
- You can go now and deactivate your newly created Facebook account. From a desktop, log in to Facebook with the new information. Go to Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivate and Deletion. Choose "Deactivate" Click "Continue to Account Deactivation" and enter your password to confirm the deactivation. That's it!
You've done it!
You have deactivated your Facebook account and kept Messenger.
As you can see, this is a pretty simple and easy way to accomplish what you want.
Be careful not to choose to permanently delete your account, otherwise you will also delete your Messenger account along with it. I would like to reassure you that by choosing the option to deactivate your account, no one is able to find you on Facebook. It's as if your profile does not exist.
Frankie's Take:
If you want to get rid of your profile on Facebook and completely ghost on this platform (including Messenger), check out my guide on how to delete a Facebook Messenger account.
Using Messenger Without a Facebook Account on a PC
Previously, I showed you how to create and use a Messenger account without having an active Facebook profile on your smartphone.
Is it possible to do this same thing on your computer?
In short, the answer is yes. The process is not as simple as it is on a smart phone, however. It is not possible to create an account on messenger.com with your PC without first having an active Facebook profile.
Allow me to clarify.
If you don't have a Facebook account yet, and go to messenger.com, you will not find an option to create a new account like you would on the mobile app.
The reason for this is simple, few people use the PC version of Messenger, and almost all of these have an active Facebook profile when they do.
It is possible to overcome this issue. You can utilize the same process for smartphone use by creating a temporary Facebook profile. You would then have the credentials to access Messenger and then disable the Facebook account.
Let me show you how to do this:
- Head over to Facebook.com and then click on "Create New Account"
- Follow the appropriate steps for registration including your name, birthdate, email address, etc. You confirm your account with a code sent to the email you used to register.
- Go to messenger.com and enter these login details to start chatting with your contacts.
- Now, deactivate your Facebook account. Log onto Facebook and reach its menu from the top right down arrow icon. Choose Settings & Privacy > Settings > Your Facebook Information > Deactivation and Deletion > Deactivate Account > Continue to Account Deactivation.
Now you have done it!
From now on, you can continue using Messenger without having an active Facebook account.
I should remind you, that deactivating a Facebook account is just like not existing at all on the social network site. No one is able to find you, and you will not be able to see your friends' walls or post content.
Frankie's Take:
This procedure is exactly the same, even if you are using the Messenger App for PC (available for free on both the Apple and Windows app stores).
What Precisely Happens When You Deactivate Facebook?
Those reading this guide don't wish to have an active Facebook account, but don't want to miss out on the features of Messenger either.
In the earlier tutorials, I explained that the only way to install and use Messenger without an active Facebook profile is to register and then deactivate the account.
But what exactly happens when an account is deactivated?
I wanted to take a moment to expand on this topic for a couple of reasons. The first is that you have asked many questions about the topic through comments and emails to the website, and the second is to show that it is nothing to be afraid of because it is just like not having one at all.
Let me explain what you're likely to experience with a deactivated Facebook profile:
- People cannot see or find you (and I think that's the main thing), meaning they cannot see your wall.
- No one can use your account to tag you in photos or other content.
- You cannot use certain Facebook products like the Oculus.
- You are welcome to reactivate your account should you decide you want to use it again.
- With a deactivated account, you can use Messenger and Facebook Messenger Rooms.
By looking this over more closely, I hope that you have a better understanding of what to expect.
Remember to follow the prompts above directly so that you do not permanently delete your account. If you do this, you will no longer have access to Facebook Messenger and must start the process over again.
For any more information, I can link you to the official Facebook page describing the differences between deactivation and deletion of your account.
FAQs
Undoubtedly, you have several concerns and questions about this process.
Many have already been in the shoes you are wearing and have asked me. So I collected the most common questions I received to help to give you the information you need as efficiently as possible.
Surely, some of you can get your questions answered here.
On some blogs I saw that you can sign up for Facebook Messenger with just a phone number, is that true?
No, you cannot anymore. In late 2019, they changed it to requiring you to have an active or a previously-used Facebook account that is not permanently deleted to access Messenger. Many blogs are not regularly updated, making information obsolete.
Can I add contacts to Messenger without my Facebook profile?
Yes, you can. You can import all of your phone contacts through the Messenger menu. You have to click on the profile picture in the top left to access Menu > Phone Contacts > Upload Contacts. Messenger automatically determines Facebook contacts and loads them into Messenger for you.
Can I use Messenger with someone who isn't my Facebook friend?
Yes. You can search for someone using the search bar and typing their first and last name into this box.
Conclusion
We have now reached the end of the guide. I hope that the information I have given you has helped. To me, helping you out is very satisfying.
Before I say goodbye, I would like to briefly go over what we've talked about. Sometimes, when there are many things discussed, it can be easy to lose track of a couple key items.
